How are you? (Blue Monday Debunked)

Did you know? 👉🏻 The BLUE MONDAY idea was apparently initiated as a marketing trick to sell sunny Holiday Packages!

According to the pseudoscience quoted for the ads, the third Monday of January is supposed to be most depressing. Why? ☹️ ...Post-Christmas blues, failed New Year’s resolutions, low motivation levels, short days, long dark nights, not great weather, (this year also -lockdown life, Covid 19… you name it!

Today we know, that there are so many reasons and factors why we may feel down thta it is impossible to set one day when everyone feels similarly bad.

Sure, we tend to feel worse during seasons change, in winter, when nights are long. We may experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). For all these reasons, January may not be the most optimistic month for us. So while the Blue Monday idea may had only been a PR trick, it eventually became an opportunity to build awareness about the importance of taking care of mental health.

So what to do to take care of our mental health right now?

Here is an inspiring example: In 2020, Samaritans (samaritans.org)) handed out cups of tea in Edinburgh to commuters at one of train stations to warm up their day and to encourage them to have a cup of tea with someone at their workplace who may be feeling lonely. They promote it as ‘Brew Monday‘ 🙂

Especially now, in difficult pandemic times, ask yourself:

  • How am I feeling? What do I need?
  • What is good for me? What serves me and what doesn’t?
  • Do I need to talk to someone? Do I need support? Where can I find it (family, friends, support organisations like samaritans.org)?

Or take another pro-active perspective and provide support to others:

  • Is there anyone around me who may need support?
  • Is there anyone I haven’t heard from in while?
  • Anyone that could be lonely? Can I help them?

… Sometimes it is just enough to call someone you feel that needs support and ask how they are doing.
