In case you wonder why setting goals in life is important and needed, then we have solid reasons for you.

If you want to close the gap between where you are today and where you want to be, then goal setting overall has been and remains one of the first steps you will need to take in your journey following your purpose and living a life you truly love.

Here are seven reasons why setting goals in life is important.

1. Setting Goals Is Important So You Can Determine What You Want In Life

The process of setting goals forces you to ask yourself what you truly want out of life.

So reflect over various areas how a life you love would look like for you. For example, ask yourself:

What does your life of ease look like? What matters to you in life? What do you believe in? What gives you meaning? When do you feel happy and free? What and who makes you feel loved? Who or what makes your life feel full and rich? …

Summarizing your beliefs and purpose in life can be a process in itself. But its worth it and once you have a good  idea of  your calling (or your personal True North) you then break your desires down into attainable, measurable goals.

Consider this inspirational quote from George Bernard Shaw next time you are thinking about what you truly want out of life: Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

2. Goals Let You Navigate Life to Follow Your True North

Having a True North to follow makes navigating the Storms of Life easier.

Your True North is your internal compass and a combination of your beliefs and your purpose. Just as a compass points at a fixed point on the globe, your personal true north pulls you forward and gives you direction so you can achieve your goals. It guides you on your path to your destination and helps you stay on track – or to get back on track. Moreover it helps you to make better choices in any circumstances you face so you can become the authentic person you want to be and achieve your goals  – with clarity and self awareness.

3. Goals Give You Focus And Structure

Setting goals makes your actions and efforts directed and effective. It allows you to weeding out wasted effort and idle movement and to spending your time with clear priorities.

So, don’t be a chaotic and erratic hummingbird searching randomly for nectar. Be rather a  focused hawk swooping down for its prey!

4. Goals Help You To Measure Progress

Being able to measure progress while you are in the process to achieving your goals can be extremely rewarding. It will help you remain focused, optimistic, encouraged and energized. It will also strengthen your resilience  overall.

When you measure progress while working towards a specific goal, you will be able to see that though you might not be where you are wanting to get, you have made movements in the right direction and are a lot better off than where you started.

So if you want to be able to keep track of your progress toward achieving a goal, you need to set milestones when defining your goal in the first place.

5. Goals Help You To Stay Motivated

You need to have goals that you truly desire to achieve!

This fuels your motivation to put all the efforts, time and work in to reach your goals. Otherwise it is easy enough to put off work until tomorrow when there is no destination attractive enough.

For example, let’s consider the life of an athlete. If they have to get in shape for say the next world championship, you better believe they are going to be working out each and every day, whether they feel good or not, whether they are sore or not, whether they are tired or not, whether they want to or not, because they have a desirable goal.

6. Goals Help You To Beat Procrastination

Procrastination is something we all battle from time-to-time. However, when you set time-boxed specific goals for what you want to achieve, it helps you understand that procrastination is wasted time. It is another day you aren’t moving closer to that goal – and you never know what tomorrow brings.

Think of this inspirational quote from Eminem when you are experiencing procrastination next time in your life: “You don’t get another chance. Life is no Nintendo game.”

7. Goal Setting Is Important To Help You To Go Beyond And Above

When you set a goal and reach that goal, it gives you the taste of victory and a strong sense of accomplishment. And then you want more of that… :).

You next thing you will do is to push yourself towards the next level, challenge yourself to move past another comfort zone, you want to achieve even more.

And from there, everything is possible!

Setting Goals Is Important So You Can Pave Your Own Ways Next

So go ahead and plan next steps to continue to pave your own ways in this world and to live a life on your own terms.

Identifying your life goals helps you make better decisions and gain more control over your future. Setting goals keeps you motivated. Goals are helping you avoid procrastination and keeping you laser-focused on achieving your dreams. It is, therefore, the act of setting, achieving and surpassing goals that make living your best life possible.
